WOBURN, Mass. (AP) - A man with a history of rape convictions who had been freed from a treatment center for the sexually dangerous when he raped an Arlington woman in 2014 has been sent to prison for life.

Essie Billingslea was sentenced Monday in Middlesex Superior Court following his conviction last month on numerous charges, including three counts of aggravated rape.

Billingslea testified that the sex was consensual.

Arlington police Chief Frederick Ryan tells the Boston Herald (https://bit.ly/21ccvuk) that given Billingslea’s history, “the sentence is just and will prevent future victimization.”

Billingslea is listed by the state as a Level 3 sex offender, considered the most likely to re-offend.

A jury in 2013 voted to release him from the treatment center even though a state-appointed board of psychologists said he was likely to reoffend.
