BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - A southern Montana man involved in a law enforcement standoff that ended with his apparent suicide over the weekend had been the subject of a drug investigation.
The Sweet Grass County sheriff’s office issued a statement Sunday saying authorities served a warrant to fingerprint James Dunakin of Reed Point on Thursday. The Billings Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1XVkaIa) the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation was investigating after a white powdery substance was found in Big Timber Grade School and Sweet Grass County High School.
Just before 9 a.m. Saturday, dispatchers received a report of shots being fired at Dunakin’s house north of Reed Point. Deputies evacuated victims and residents of nearby houses.
At about 6:40 p.m. officers with the Gallatin County Special Response Team entered the house and found Dunakin dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 59.
