DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) - The sentencing hearing for a man convicted of fatally stabbing a Davenport woman and injuring her husband has been postponed.

The Quad-City Times (https://bit.ly/23N12jP ) reports that 49-year-old Gary Fortune’s hearing has been postponed until Feb. 18. The hearing had been scheduled for Thursday. Fortune’s lawyer, Thomas Gaul, filed a motion Jan. 28 to delay the hearing, citing that he was involved in another murder trial this week.

Prosecutors say Fortune broke into the Davenport apartment of his former fiancee’s 61-year-old mother, Betty Simmons, and Betty Simmons’ husband, Jack Simmons, in September 2014 and stabbed them. Betty Simmons was later pronounced dead and Jack Simmons survived multiple stab wounds.

Fortune was found guilty of first-degree murder, attempted murder, first-degree burglary and first-degree arson.
