DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A building that once housed a Des Moines church is now scheduled for demolition, after the City Council voted not to intervene with the property.

The Des Moines Register reports (https://dmreg.co/1Sgztep ) the Burns United Methodist Church congregation has applied for permits to demolish its empty building on Crocker Street. The City Council voted to proceed toward demolition even though local historical society members sought to save the building.

The congregation used the space from 1930 until 2011 but moved to 1909 Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway.

Church members want to sell the property to real estate developer Hubbell Realty, which has offered to buy the property and build the second phase of an apartment complex on the site.
