NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - Newport News police say two men were killed and a suspect was later wounded in a confrontation with officers.

Media outlets report that police responding to a call about an accident Thursday found two men who had been shot in a van that had struck a parked car. The two men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Two officers later confronted a person who fit the description of the possible shooter. Both officers fired their weapons, hitting the suspect in the abdomen. Police spokeswoman Holy McPherson declined to say whether the man shot by police was armed.

Names of the people involved were not immediately released.

Four schools in the area were locked down for about two hours because of the shootings.
