FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A Fayetteville couple has been charged with felony cruelty to animals after authorities say a dog was found starved to death in their apartment.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office says in a news release that Cumberland County Animal Control officers responded to a call Tuesday in which someone said a dog had been abandoned in an apartment.

Authorities had the property manager open the door the next day, at which time officers say they found one dead dog and another one living. There was no food or water in the dogs’ crates.

Director of Animal Control Dr. John Lauby says a necropsy showed that the dead dog had starved.

Authorities say 30-year-old Frankie L. Barker and 27-year-old Danielle E. Durocher have been arrested. It’s unclear whether they have attorneys.
