GATESVILLE, Texas (AP) - A Central Texas man has been charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child over the death of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son.

Coryell County jail records show 27-year-old Chet Shelton of Gatesville was being held Monday on $500,000 bond. Shelton, who was arrested Sunday, was held without bond on a warrant in another case, after serving time for injury to a child and being paroled.

Police were summoned Wednesday night about a boy found unresponsive at a home in Gatesville. Authorities say Shelton had been watching the child all day while his girlfriend was at work. The boy died later at a hospital.

District Attorney Dusty Boyd says an autopsy showed the toddler had been sexually assaulted and died of blunt force trauma. The boy’s name wasn’t immediately released.
