CUSSETA, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say an 85-year-old man was fatally shot by men who forced their way into his home in Cusseta.
Local news media report Lee County coroner Bill Harris identified the man as Curtis Thornton Rudd. Rudd’s wife called authorities shortly after 1 a.m. Tuesday to report her husband had been shot by intruders.
Rudd’s wife told investigators she and her husband awoke when their front door was forced open. She said two masked men entered and began shooting.
Rudd’s wife told investigators her husband was able to shoot back before the men fled the scene. Rudd’s wife was not injured.
Sheriff’s Capt. Van Jackson tells the Opelika-Auburn News a person who showed up at a hospital with a gunshot wound is considered a person of interest.
The investigation was ongoing.
