MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Police in Mesa say an officer fatally shot a man after receiving reports he was pointing a rifle out of the hotel window.

Police were still withholding the man’s name Tuesday, pending notification of his family.

They say the officer has been placed on standard administrative leave.

Police say two guests in the pool area reported seeing the man point a rifle outside the fifth-floor window of his hotel room about 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

Officers located the hotel room and told the man inside to come out.

They say the man refused to comply with officer commands and reached toward his lower back several times.

Police say the officer felt threatened and fired at the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

They say a gun was later found.
