RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The North Carolina Arts Council is participating in a national research study that will measure the economic impact of nonprofit arts organizations.

The council is one of nearly 300 organizations in the U.S. participating in the study being conducted by Americans for the Arts, a national nonprofit.

The groups will gather detailed financial and event attendance data from nonprofit arts and cultural organizations in 2016 for the study titled Arts and Economic Prosperity 5. The North Carolina Arts Council is working with 31 local groups conducting studies in 32 counties.

A similar study conducted in 2012 found that nonprofit arts and culture are a $1.2 billion industry in North Carolina, supporting more than 43,000 full-time equivalent jobs and generating $119 million in local and state government revenues.
