HARTFORD, Vt. (AP) - Officials in a Vermont town are pursuing a local option tax as a way to raise revenue.
Proponents say the 1 percent surcharge on rooms, meals and alcohol would mostly affect tourists and travelers who might stop at one of Hartford’s restaurants or hotels.
Some business owners say the tax could hurt their bottom line. If it’s approved, affected owners would collect the tax and send it to the state on a quarterly basis.
Selectboard Chairman Chuck Wooster says Hartford would receive at least $250,000 annually from the tax. The money would be placed in a fund that could only be spent with approval from voters.
The Valley News reports (https://bit.ly/1lruuJI ) voters are set to consider the tax in March.
