SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah authorities are reviewing how an ex-convict with a history of gun charges was released to a drug treatment center before he fatally shot a police officer.

Prison spokeswoman Brooke Adams said Thursday that officials are investigating every aspect of the case.

Greg Johnson with the Utah parole board says officials could have kept 31-year-old Cory Lee Henderson in prison if they knew he had been arrested on suspicion of federal gun and drug charges.

Johnson says they thought Henderson had simply violated his parole when they released him to the state-run treatment center in November.

U.S. Attorney for Utah John Huber says prosecutors will also review how they handled the case.

Henderson walked away from the facility weeks before the Sunday shooting death of Officer Douglas Barney from Salt Lake County’s Unified Police Department.
