BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) - A former nurse at a federal prison in Southeast Texas has been sentenced to three years in prison for smuggling heroin into the lockup.

Lakista Lashau Davis of Beaumont was sentenced Thursday by a federal judge in Beaumont. The 44-year-old Davis last August pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute heroin.

Prosecutors say Davis, from November 2014 to March 2015, worked as a contract nurse at the Beaumont Federal Correctional Complex.

Investigators say Davis conspired with an inmate to smuggle heroin into the unit for distribution, in exchange for a $5,000 payment.

The nurse was indicted last April. Prosecutors didn’t immediately provide information on the inmate allegedly associated with Davis in the heroin-smuggling effort.
