SAEGERTOWN, Pa. (AP) - Authorities have been trying to identify a man found dead in a burning pickup truck in northwestern Pennsylvania.

The pickup was registered in North Carolina, but the Crawford County coroner and state police haven’t been able to confirm the victim’s identity.

A passing motorist spotted the burning truck along Route 98 in Cussewago (kus-eh-WAY’-goh) Township about 10:30 p.m. That’s about 100 miles north of Pittsburgh.

Police say it appears the truck ran off the road into a deep ditch when it caught fire. They believe the driver was trying to escape when he burned.

Coroner Scott Schell says authorities were continuing to try to identify the man Friday.

Schell would not be more specific about where in North Carolina the truck was registered. The cause of the man’s death also hasn’t been released.
