UPDATE: Navy says initial inspection at San Diego medical center found no sign of gunman or shooting, the Associated Press reports.
Earlier, the Naval Medical Center San Diego said through its Facebook page on Tuesday morning that there was an active shooter in one of the facility’s buildings.
“An active shooter has just been reported in building #26 at Naval Medical Center San Diego,” the hospital said through social media shortly after 8 a.m. local time. “All occupants are advised to run, hide or fight.
“All non-emergency response personnel are asked to stay away from the compound,” the warning continued.
Witnesses reported hearing three shots just after 8 a.m., perhaps from the building’s basements, local network KUSI reported. A SWAT team had entered the facility by 8:45, NBC News reported.
A spokesman for the medical center, Mike Alvarez, told CNN that police were responding to reports of shots fired and said the incident is being treated as an active shooter situation. Nearby schools have been placed on lockdown as a precaution.
