MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) - The family of an Oregon man shot by U.S. marshals has settled a wrongful death lawsuit for $250,000.

The Mail Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1lSUcXE ) that 20-year-old James “Jimmy” Georgeson was shot three times by marshals while trying to escape capture in Medford in 2012. His family originally sought $1.5 million from the federal government.

The family’s attorney argued that the marshals used excessive force.

Georgeson’s best friend witnessed his death and filed a separate lawsuit complaining that she suffered physical injuries and psychological trauma.

Court documents say Georgeson’s family and friend settled with U.S. Attorneys in private mediation in November. About a quarter of the money went to the friend and the family split the rest.

The settlement document states that it is not an admission of liability by the United States.
