DOBSON, N.C. (AP) - A Surry County commissioner who pleaded guilty last week to four counts of felony obtaining property by false pretenses has been given a suspended sentence.

The Winston-Salem Journal (https://bit.ly/1JFhHz2 ) reports commissioner Paul Johnson was also fined $2,000 and ordered to pay $8,299 in restitution Tuesday.

Defense attorney Scott Lowry says Johnson has apologized to county commissioners, staff and citizens. He said John would resign his seat.

Johnson pleaded guilty to obtaining property by false pretenses related to submitting false travel expenses and other travel-related claims.

He has been placed on supervised probation for 36 months and ordered to perform 100 hours of community service within eight months.

The Surry County Board of Commissioners scheduled a meeting Friday to declare a vacancy on the board and to possibly fill the position.
