CINCINNATI (AP) - A police officer has been charged with theft in office in southwestern Ohio.

Court documents show that Cincinnati police officer Joseph Simpson was indicted Tuesday on the felony charge in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court in Cincinnati.

The 40-year-old officer was released on his own recognizance. Court documents show the alleged offense occurred Dec. 27. The documents did not show an attorney for Simpson. No home phone listing could be found.

The city manager’s office referred to a memo sent Wednesday by City Manager Harry Black when asked for comment Thursday.

Black’s memo says Simpson was suspended without pay pending the case’s outcome and was working an off-duty restaurant detail when the alleged offense occurred. The indictment followed an internal criminal investigation.

Black didn’t say how much money was involved.
