MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (AP) - Officials representing three northeastern West Virginia cities have appealed to Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin to request that the federal government declare a disaster because of the weekend snowstorm that dumped 40 inches or more in several tri-county communities.

Ranson City Manager Andy Blake told The Journal of Martinsburg (https://bit.ly/1nxXykG) on Tuesday that he, along with the city managers of Martinsburg and Charles Town, have all made the request for FEMA public financial reimbursement assistance.

Blake says his city is spending $1,500 to $2,000 an hour to respond to the storm.

If a disaster is declared, local jurisdictions would be able to apply for reimbursement for the costs of responding to the historic storm.

Blake says federal reimbursements for snowstorms are rare, but he believes the recent storm meets the necessary criteria.
