DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) - An autopsy shows a driver shot by Dearborn police died of multiple gunshots.
Authorities on Thursday also released the name of the 31-year-old woman, Janet Wilson of Detroit. She was shot in her car during the Wednesday afternoon rush hour after fleeing from the Fairlane shopping mall.
State police Lt. Mike Shaw says Wilson tried to drive away as officers approached her car on a busy road. He says shots were fired because officers feared they would be run over.
Shaw tells radio station WWJ-AM that Wilson’s “weapon” was her car, a Chevrolet HHR.
It’s the second fatal shooting by a Dearborn officer since late December. In a statement, the department says it’s “deeply saddened” by the two shootings but proud of its history of “appropriate use of force.”
