SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - A deaf woman charged in the 2011 slaying of a homeless man in Sioux Falls has been sentenced to time served.

The Argus Leader (https://argusne.ws/1TsjM3D ) reports 33-year-old Sadie Red Bear was sentenced Friday. As part of a plea agreement, Red Bear earlier pleaded guilty to charges of misprision of a felony and accessory to a felony.

Red Bear was arrested in the spring of 2015 and charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault in the death of 58-year-old Daniel Eastman. He was beaten and stabbed downtown in August 2011 and died in hospice three months later.

Circuit Judge Susan Sabers on Friday upheld the plea agreement despite receiving a letter from Eastman’s daughter asking her to drop the charges because the victim’s family isn’t confident that Red Bear committed the crime.

Read Bear maintains her innocence and says she accepted the agreement because she “didn’t want to get to prison.”
