PARISH, N.Y. (AP) - State police say a former court clerk in a small upstate New York town near Lake Ontario has been arrested and charged with stealing more than $4,000.
Sue Wert was arraigned Friday on charges of grand larceny, forgery and tampering with a public record. A message left at a number registered to her wasn’t immediately returned Saturday.
Authorities say a joint investigation by state police and court officials found the money was taken between January 2012 and Mach 2014.
They say the 62-year-old resigned in January 2014.
Authorities believe the missing money was deposited with the court overseen by her husband, Judge Harold Wert.
Local media have reported that Harold Wert took a leave of absence last year at the suggestion of court officials investigating his courthouse.
