NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - A domestic dispute in Newark ended with a stabbing that left one man hospitalized and another under arrest.

City authorities say the incident began around 2:45 a.m. Sunday, when the 31-year-old victim went to an apartment where his two daughters live with their mother and 34-year-old Gary Austin.

When the man knocked on the door to get car keys so the girls and their mother could leave, Austin allegedly stabbed him several times. But the victim used a shovel to fend off Austin, who ran back into the apartment.

The victim was hospitalized in critical but stable condition. His name has not been released.

Austin faces aggravated assault and weapons counts, and authorities say more charges could be filed. It’s not known if he’s retained an attorney.
