RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Authorities say a Richmond police officer has been shot in the leg during a pursuit.

Local media outlets report that the incident happened early Sunday on the city’s north side.

Richmond police spokesman Gene Lepley says officers on patrol approached a man around 12:15 a.m. Lepley says when the officers stopped to talk to the man, he ran off.

Police say officers were chasing the man when the man turned and fired multiple shots, hitting one of the officers in the leg. Lepley says officers returned the gunfire.

The officer was taken to a local hospital and is expected to recover.

Police say the unidentified suspected shooter was ultimately arrested.

No other details have been released so far.
