BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) - A 52-year-old South Texas man has been charged in the slayings of his parents, who police say were beaten to death with the handle of an ax.

A Brownsville municipal court judge on Sunday arraigned Joel Collazo on two counts of murder. Bond was set at $2 million. He remained in Cameron County Jail on Sunday. Jail records did not list at attorney for him.

Brownsville police discovered the bodies of 86-year-old Jesus Collazo Sr. and 83-year-old Juanita Collazo their home on Friday. Authorities went there after getting a call from another son regarding a welfare concern.

Police say Jesus Collazo Sr. was killed on Tuesday. It’s unclear when the suspect’s mother was killed.

Authorities said an accelerant was poured over the bodies, indicating Joel Collazo planned to burn them.
