COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) - Officials say the state investigation into the shooting death of a 26-year-old man by Columbus police is making progress.

The Commercial Dispatch reports (bit.ly/1RuqJzJ) Columbus Police Department Interim Chief Fred Shelton provided an update on Ricky Ball’s death during Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

Ball was fatally shot by an officer on Oct. 16. The details surrounding the incident remain unclear and are still under investigation.

Shelton says a preliminary autopsy has been completed, but the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is not ready to release their findings.

He also says MBI has taken witness statements and is awaiting evidence testing from the State Crime Lab.

Shelton said the investigation’s findings will be turned over to District Attorney Scott Colom once MBI concludes its work.
