CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - The lawyer for a man accused of planning a near-fatal stabbing says he plans to admit his role but will argue an insanity defense.

Police said Andrea Halvorsen was stabbed 16 times by Samantha Heath at Bear Brook State Park in Allenstown in January 2014. Heath pleaded guilty to attempted murder and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Kyle Buffum is charged with conspiracy to commit murder and other offenses. Authorities said 24-year-old Buffum came up with a plan to kill Halvorsen and then rob a string of gas stations and flee to Florida.

The Concord Monitor reports (bit.ly/1Uz7ggG) his lawyer says the trial will focus on Buffum’s mental state. Buffum will have to show that he was unstable when the crimes occurred.
