BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Birmingham police say a pregnant 16-year-old has died after being shot during a robbery.

Lt. Sean Edwards said in an emailed statement that the girl and her boyfriend were sitting in a car eating pizza at an apartment complex in northeast Birmingham early Friday morning when a man approached their vehicle.

Edwards says the man demanded money and shot the girl during the course of the robbery. Police say the girl’s boyfriend drove to a hospital and the teen later died of her injuries.

Police have described the suspect as a black male who wore a blue bandanna and fled the scene in a dark vehicle.

Police Chief A.C. Roper says the case is the department’s highest priority. Additional information wasn’t immediately available.
