LORAIN, Ohio (AP) - Republic Steel has announced layoffs of about 200 workers as a result of its decision to temporarily idle its rolling mill operations in northeast Ohio.

A statement Thursday from the Canton-based company says it hopes to resume operations at the Lorain site in the near future.

The statement says the plant has struggled over the last year with a decline in the energy market and customer demand.

The layoffs will be staggered over the next few months, with the majority being completed by the end of the first quarter.

Union officials say Republic workers expected to start receiving layoff notices as early as Friday

Republic Steel produces special bar quality steel used in axles, drive trains, suspensions and other parts of cars and off-road vehicles.
