MCCOMB, Miss. (AP) - A doctor from McComb, Mississippi, has pleaded guilty to federal charges before a senior U.S. District judge.

U.S. Attorney Gregory Davis, in a news release, said 59-year-old Lawrence Stewart pleaded guilty Wednesday to distributing and dispensing a Schedule IV controlled substance outside the scope of professional practice.

WLBT-TV (https://bit.ly/29Z9z0q ) reports Stewart will face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine when sentenced Sept. 27.

Stewart was rumored to have traded the drugs for sexual favors. He was arrested at his office in McComb in December 2015.

He was charged with a 27-count federal indictment that’s the result of a complex pharmaceutical drug investigation that began about one year ago.
