BRYANT, S.D. (AP) - Authorities say a family of 12 in South Dakota had to relocate after a fire started by a lighter damaged their home.
The Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office says one of its deputies noticed the fire while on patrol Wednesday afternoon in Bryant, a town about 50 miles northwest of Brookings.
A mother and her children were inside the home and the deputy was able to notify them. Two children thought to be missing were found safe hiding behind a bush in the back yard. One child had minor injuries.
Crews determined the cause of the fire to be from a child playing with a lighter in front of the home.
The family has been relocated to family and friends in the community.
