NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - A flyover bridge in Norfolk that closed suddenly last week will reopen next month - with weight restrictions.
The Virginian-Pilot reports (https://bit.ly/29Inapm) the West Ocean View Avenue flyover bridge across Tidewater Drive will reopen Aug. 1.
The bridge was closed July 5 due to structural problems, angering many Ocean View and Willoughby residents, who had to learn a new zigzagging traffic pattern.
Built in 1958, the one-lane flyover bridge has been the only direct route from Willoughby Spit into Ocean View.
A March inspection found sections of the concrete deck were falling apart, leaving exposed rebar.
Once the bridge reopens, vehicles, buses and emergency vehicles weighing less than 16 tons will be able to use it.
Tractor-trailers, garbage trucks, fire engines and buses weighing 16 tons or more will be banned.
