Bond has been denied for a 25-year-old man accused of gunning down two soldiers who were reportedly trying to protect a woman outside a South Carolina bar.

Lexington deputies said Staff Sgt. Charles Allen Judge Jr., 40, and Sgt. 1st Class Jonathan Michael Prins, 29, were both shot and killed by Joseph Elijah Mills outside the Frayed Knot Bar & Grill in Lake Murray early Sunday morning, a local CBS News affiliate reported.

Mr. Mills was in an altercation with a woman outside the bar when the soldiers tried to intervene, deputies said.

Justin Brooks, the owner of Frayed Knot, said Mr. Mills was kicking and hitting the woman on the ground.

“When [Judge and Prins] get in within two feet of him — they both have their hands up trying to talk to him — and he just shoots them in cold blood,” Mr. Brooks said. “And then just walks off like nothing happened. Walked off like he was shopping at Wal-Mart, right down the aisle. Put a shirt over his head so people couldn’t see him and just walked right off.”

Lexington County Sheriff’s spokesman Capt. Adam Myrick said the woman was seriously injured in the attack.

“One of the adult male victims was pronounced dead on scene. One was transported to the hospital where he was eventually pronounced dead there,” Capt. Myrick said.

Mr. Mills left the scene after the killings but was eventually captured late Sunday afternoon, deputies said.

A judge denied bond for Mr. Mills at a hearing Monday. He told the judge he was “very sorry” for what happened, but said he was chasing the woman because she took drugs from him.

A GoFundMe page said Sgt. Prins leaves behind a wife and three small children. It raised more than $14,000 by Wednesday morning.

Sgt. Judge reportedly left behind two children.

“They are definitely heroes,” Mr. Brooks said.
