DENVER (AP) - Colorado’s Democratic House majority leader is telling the Democratic National Convention that Americans don’t define themselves by their net worth.

Crisanta Duran cited her own experience to make that point and support Hillary Clinton on Thursday’s closing day of the convention in Philadelphia.

Considered a rising star in party circles, Duran recounted her own heritage as a sixth-generation Coloradan of Native American, Mexican, French and Spanish ancestry.

She also touched upon a childhood in which her family briefly depended on food stamps.

“Only in America,” Duran says, “could a shy little girl from Northglenn and Arvada, Colorado, grow up to break glass ceilings and serve as majority leader at the Colorado House of Representatives.”
