VACHERIE, La. (AP) - Louisiana State Police say an off-duty Port Allen police officer and two fishermen rescued a man whose SUV had crashed into a bayou in St. James Parish.

A news release Thursday said Officer Robert Cannon was able to get 30-year-old Aron Jackson of Houma out of his submerged 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer after the wreck Wednesday evening.

Police say fishermen Gabriel Rouge and Kevin Scioneaux (SY-oh-noh) provided a life jacket and kayak to float Jackson to safety.

Police say Jackson was taken to a hospital for treatment of moderate injuries.

The accident happened on Louisiana Highway 20 at Vacherie (VASH-uh-ree), near the Bayou Chevreuil (shev-roy) Bridge.
