WOODBURY, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey judge has sentenced a man who attacked his girlfriend in a convenience store to 13 years in prison for attempted murder.

Dwight Qawi was sentenced Friday. He had previously pleaded guilty in the July 2015 attack in Glassboro in which he punched and kicked the woman, causing severe head injuries.

The 32-year-old Mays Landing resident also is a convicted sex offender, and was sentenced to three years for not notifying police that he’d changed his address. The sentence will run concurrently to the 13-year sentence.

Qawi will have to serve 85 percent of his sentence before he’s eligible for parole.
