NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - Newport News police say a 17-year-old girl struck and killed a man who was mowing his lawn.

Police say officers pulled over 34-year-old Shawn Collier at Tyner and Richneck Roads to serve a drug-related warrant on Friday afternoon. While officers were arresting Collier police say a 17-year-old jumped into the driver’s seat and drove away. Police say she struck 42-year-old Arnold Coates a few minutes later, around 3:30 p.m. on Red Oak Circle.

Police say the girl continued to drive until she crashed into an SUV, at which point she ran to a nearby home and called a relative. She surrendered to police shortly after.

Police say the girl is wanted for robbery in Henrico County, and is a runaway. Police have not identified her.
