DENALI NATIONAL PARK, Alaska (AP) - Officials say that much of the only road that runs through Denali National Park has been closed after a large mudslide.

Park staff on Sunday closed Denali Park Road at mile 67 just west of the Eielson Visitor Center after a mudslide Saturday morning covered the route with debris that is 100 feet wide and 100 feet deep.

Officials say in a statement that the park’s road crew is working to clear the debris and have at least one lane of traffic open soon.

Officials say the visitor center received at least six inches of rain the past week.

The closure of the road has stranded guests and employees at private lodges in Kantishna and the western end of the park road, but everyone is safe. Officials say some guests have chosen to be flown out by a private air taxi that operates in the area.
