A famous character from the “Star Trek” series has been revealed to be gay: Hikaru Sulu.

Actor John Cho has played the iconic role, once reserved for George Takei, since 2009. The move by Paramount Pictures is a first for the franchise.

“I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out it, which is where I hope we are going as a species — to not politicize one’s personal orientations,” Mr. Cho told the Herald Sun Thursday.

Mr. Takei, who announced he was gay in 2005, played the USS Enterprise officer from 1966 through 1991.

“If I wanted to work as an actor, I had to keep it a secret,” Mr. Takei said during a 2015 interview with News Corp. “Back then I couldn’t marry a white person — that was against the law here, miscegenation. But now I am married to a white dude so we have changed.”

“Star Trek Beyond,” directed by Justin Lin, opens in North America on July 22. The film also stars Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock.
