NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a hit-and-run driver struck and seriously injured a Newark police officer who was issuing a summons to another driver.
The accident occurred around 3:30 a.m. Sunday in the area of Foundry and Roanoke streets. The 37-year-old officer’s injuries were not considered life-threatening and he was hospitalized in serious but stable condition.
Further details on his injuries were not immediately available. Authorities have not said how far the officer was dragged.
The officer’s name has not been released. City officials say he’s a 14-year veteran of the force.
No other injuries were reported in the incident.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and city police are investigating the matter.
