LEECHBURG, Pa. (AP) - A western Pennsylvania school district has hired a new boys’ basketball coach in the wake of hazing allegations.

The Leechburg School board on Monday hired Corey Smith to replace Damian Davies.

Davies’ contract wasn’t renewed after police and the district investigated allegations that a stick was used to haze some players in a sexually suggestive manner. No criminal charges have resulted, though police say the allegations stretched back a decade.

Parents, players and others complained Davies was unfairly made a scapegoat. Davies denied wrongdoing and had reapplied for the job.

He remains a social studies teacher in the district about 30 miles northeast of Pittsburgh and will continue to serve as a volunteer coach on the girls’ basketball team.

Smith was an assistant coach in the neighboring Armstrong School District.

This story has been corrected to show the previous coach’s last name is Davies, not Davis, on the fourth reference.
