BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Birmingham police have charged a man with the Memorial Day theft of a patrol car that was later found crashed.

Al.com reports (https://bit.ly/1U4WgZQ ) police announced charges Monday against 28-year-old Corey Jerome Craig. They said an officer spotted a suspect, later identified as Craig, while investigating a burglary May 30 near the Midfield area.

The officer had left the vehicle running - and police say Craig went around the back of a building, jumped into the police car and drove off. Officers later found the car, crashed in a nearby wooded area.

At the time, officials said there would be an internal investigation because police officers are discouraged from leaving keys in their patrol cars.

Jail records do not indicate whether Craig has an attorney.
