HACKENSACK, N.J. (AP) - Prosecutors say a street gang member shot 15 times during a shootout with police in New Jersey has pleaded guilty under a plea deal.
The Record newspaper reports (https://bit.ly/1Pf4I4g ) Robert Leonardis pleaded guilty on Monday to attempted murder of a police officer and three aggravated assault charges in the July 2013 shootout.
Defense attorney, Vincent Basile, says his client, who appeared in court using a wheelchair, suffered leg and intestinal injuries in the shooting, but that Leonardis admits he’s responsible for causing the shootout.
Leonardis also admitted to burglarizing an Oakland home and to aggravated assault for stabbing a man who barged into Leonardis’ home and threatened his family.
Leonardis is expected to serve two decades in prison under the deal. His sentencing is scheduled for September.
