DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Election officials monitoring Iowa’s primary election say voter turnout appears light in some counties but it may meet expectations in others.
Kevin Hall, spokesman for Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate, says it’s difficult to compare Tuesday’s primary election turnout with previous years because it hinges on competitive races that drive voters to the polls.
Iowa voters kicked off the presidential election process with its first-in-the-nation caucuses in February, and they have now turned their attention to congressional, legislative and local races.
In Polk County, Auditor Jamie Fitzgerald estimated turnout would be about 10 percent. In Linn County, turnout as of 3 p.m., with six hours left of voting, was 3.9 percent.
