North Carolina Rep. Renee Ellmers is being called a mean girl after she was caught on camera Tuesday poking fun at a woman’s weight gain just hours before losing her state’s primary.

After the Republican got out of her car to vote Tuesday, she greeted Maggie Sandrock, a former chair of the Harnett County Republican Party, and told her she “gained some weight,” a local CBS News affiliate reported.

Ms. Ellmers continued walking by and said, “You’re eating a little bit too much pork barbecue. Whoo!”

Ms. Sandrock later told the station that she worked on Ms. Ellmers’ previous two runs for Congress but switched her support to Republican George Holding, who won Tuesday night’s primary in the 2nd Congressional District.

“Typical Renee,” Ms. Sandrock told WNCN. “She has become a mean girl on steroids in my view.”

Ms. Ellmers was unapologetic.

“She’s gained some weight. Yeah, she’s put on a little weight,” Ms. Ellmers reiterated to WNCN, saying that she knows Ms. Sandrock personally.

Asked if she considered Ms. Sandrock a friend, the congresswoman said “sure.”

Ms. Sandrock agreed that Ms. Ellmers is a friend, “but certainly not a good one.”

“Good friends don’t tell you you’re fat or you’re getting fat. They may say, ‘Everything going well Maggie? You look a little stressed out,’” Ms. Sandrock said. “But they don’t say, ‘Too much pork barbecue, Maggie.’”

Still, she said her decision to support Mr. Holding was nothing personal against Ms. Ellmers.

“I think she’s a lovely woman,” Ms. Sandrock told WNCN. “She has a great family. She has been a member of this community forever. She’s a nurse. She’s a caregiver.”
