VISALIA, California (AP) - Police say lockdown at five Central California schools clustered together has been lifted after they determined there was no gunman nearby.

Sgt. Damon Maurice of the Visalia Police Department said Thursday that officers ordered the schools to be locked down early Thursday. The schools are all within the same city block in Visalia, a community 45 miles southeast of Fresno.

He says a male with a handgun was reported behind one of the schools in a common area with access to all five campuses.

The lockdown impacted hundreds and staff members and students at a high school, an adult school, a middle school, an elementary school and a school for special needs students. Students returned to classes before noon.

Maurice says there were no reports of shots fired.
