COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Columbus police say their review board has determined an officer didn’t violate department policy when he shot and killed an armed man who attacked him.
The division says the officer was at a home on the city’s near north side on a Saturday evening last March to collect information from relatives of the man who said he’d made threats against them. Authorities say 42-year-old Jason L. Smith returned to the home and immediately began assaulting the officer. Police say Smith reached for his handgun during the struggle, and the officer shot him.
Smith died at the scene.
The review board concluded the officer’s actions were within the department’s policy on use of firearms.
