ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a Long Island man is accused of trying to steal $100 from Girl Scouts who were selling cookies.

Nassau County police say Michael Avelli was arrested Thursday on a robbery charge.

They say the 34-year-old swiped a cash box that had about $100 inside from a table the Girl Scouts were using to sell cookies near a Long Island Rail Road station in Rockville Centre on Wednesday.

Police say a man who witnessed the incident ran after Avelli. They say Avelli hit the man in the face and then took off, leaving the cash behind.

The man had bruises, but denied medical treatment.

Avelli was arrested at his home the next day.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Avelli had an attorney who could comment on the allegations.
