PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island tax officials are warning business owners about scammers who pose as tax collectors.
The Rhode Island Division of Taxation says on Friday that the scammers say they work for the department and demand immediate payment.
The agency says someone went to a business in Providence and demanded cash for overdue taxes. It says another business owner may also been approached with the same scam.
The Division of Taxation says its agents never ask for cash payments for outstanding tax bills.
It says it has temporarily stopped making collections in person in response to the scam.
Any business approached by someone claiming to be from the agency and asking for money is asked to call the agency, the attorney general’s office and police.
