The officer who died in an ambush outside Prince George’s County police station was actually killed by police crossfire while the attackers recorded the scene for fun, according to the department.

The fatal gunfight began when one of three brothers in custody opened fire in an unprovoked attack.

But the Prince George’s Police Department confirmed that Officer Jacai Colson was accidentally “shot by a fellow responding officer during the gun battle.”

Chief Henry Stawinski made the announcement at an emotional press conference Monday where publicly named the suspects for the first time — Michael, Malik and Elijah Ford. A fourth brother also is being sought.

He denounced Ford for the ambush, which he said involved Michael attacking police for no reason, expecting to die in a gunfight, while Malik and Elijah recorded it.

Officer Colson died as the brothers recorded the firefight “as if it was a game,” an angry Chief Stawinski said.
